Vendor Biography

I am an artist based in Warrenpoint, Co. Down. I make metal sculptures inspired by my love for aeroplanes old and new as well as rockets, satellites and most recently boats.
I graduated from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin in 2001. During my time there I had the opportunity to visit the hangars at Dublin airport. This was where my passion for aeroplanes was ignited. I was completely in awe of the sheer scale and craftsmanship of the planes. Seeing them stripped back, awaiting repair, exposed their fragility which was something I really wanted to capture in my work. I began looking at inanimate objects like planes, rockets and satellites in a new way. I wanted to highlight their beauty and vulnerability as well as celebrate man’s achievements in these areas. I use influences from nature such as birds, fish and trees to bring an organic quality to the work and to give each piece it’s own personality. I work in copper, brass and silver and occasionally found objects. I enjoy experimenting with metal, creating textures and colours, using heat and hammers as well as traditional metalworking techniques. I use thin sheets of metal and build each piece up with layers and layers of detail. The work is very delicate in contrast to the subject matter. I see my work as a celebration of man’s bravery and, ingenuity, breaking boundaries to achieve what was once thought of as impossible.
